A Tie -Breaker Bid For Kieron Pollard, Return of ICL Cricketers To IPL and all 11 Eleven Pakistani Players being ignored by the 8 IPL Franchises were the major highlights of the 3rd IPL Auction which was held in Mumbai On Tuesday, 19th January, 2010.

Till yesterday speculations were ripe that Current Pakistan T20 Skipper Shahid Afridi will be the hottest pick in this 3rd IPL Players Auction & the 8 franchises will bid tough to get him in their squads, But Surprisingly it was the Hard Hitting All – Rounder from Trinidad and Tobago, Kieron Pollard who walked away with this honour as Mukesh & Nita Ambani owned Mumbai Indian’s bought out Pollard for a huge sum of USD $750,000 only after they quoted the top bid in a historical Tie- breaker bid round in which along with Mumbai Indians, Pollard was aggresively sought after by Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Shane Bond – The Top Speedster from New Zealand who marks his foray into the Indian Premier League after decamping from the ICL, was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for a sum of USD $750,000 which they won in a silent Tie-Breaker Bid Round along with Deccan Chargers.

IPL Auction 2010 Sold Players List

Sold players: Kieron Pollard (Mumbai, USD750,000+), Shane Bond (Kolkata, 750,000+), Kemar Roach (Deccan, 720,000), Wayne Parnell (Delhi, 610,000), Mohammad Kaif (Punjab, 250,000), Eoin Morgan (Bangalore, 220,000), Damien Martyn (Rajasthan, 100,000), Justin Kemp (Chennai, 100,000), Thissara Perera (Chennai, 50,000), Adam Voges (Rajasthan, 50,000), Yusuf Abdulla (Punjab, 50,000

Losing Bond to Kolkata Knight Riders did not dent the hopes of Deccan Chargers as they decided to buy another young promising fast bowler – Kemar Roach of the West Indies for a staggering amount of USD $7,50,000. The same amount as Pollard and Bond. Roach’s claim to fame is the series Down Under in Australia where he consistently troubled Ricky Ponting with short pitched deliveries, Deccan Chargers will be hoping that he spearheads their opening pace attack alongside the Indian Left armer R.P Singh & they might replace him in the place of his West Indian Team mate Fidel Edwards who unfortunately did not have too much of a good outing for the Chargers in last year’s IPL, which eventually was won by Deccan Chargers.

Another Young Cricketer alongside Roach who was sold for a much higher price than the base price was South African left arm fast bowler – Wayne Parnell, he was bought by Delhi Daredevils for a price of USD $610,000. Eoin Morgan, the England batsman, was picked up by Bangalore Royal Challengers for USD $220,000. Mohammad Kaif, the only Indian up for auction, went unsold in the first round of bidding but was later signed up by Kings XI Punjab for $ USD 250,000.

Ex International & Former ICL Stars Justin Kemp and Damien Martyn from South Africa and Australia were sold at their base price each since barring 2 franchisees, no other franchisee bid for them & eventually Kemp was bought by Chennai Super Kings & Damien Martyn by Rajasthan Royals, both were sold at their base price of USD $ 100,000.

Thissara Perera was the Only Sri Lankan who was bought by Chennai SuperKings for USD $50,000, Adam Voges makes his IPL Debut with Rajasthan Royals who bought him for USD $ 50,000, and Yusuf Abdulla’s Contract was again bought by his previous team – Priety Zinta & Ness Wadia owned Kings XI Punjab for a sum of USD $ 50,000.

Only three of India’s Under-19 players, priced at Rs. 800,000 each, were eligible to play in the IPL and they were chosen by a draft system. Bangalore picked U-19 captain Ashok Menaria, Deccan went for Harmeet Singh and Mumbai opted for Harshal Patel.

But The Major Controversy of the entire IPL 2010 Auction was the fact that not a single Pakistani player of the 11 on the auction list – including several of the World Cup-winning team – were completely ignored by all the franchises, ironically the 1st player whose name was called in the Auction was Pakistan T20 Skipper Shahid Afridi, but to a major surprise – No Franchisee bid for him, The same fate greeted other promising cricketers from Pakistan including Umar Gul, Mohammad Aamir, Sohail Tanvir, Abdul Razzaq, Rana Naveed and Imran Nazir. None of the 8 franchises were keen to buy any Pakistani Player into their squads.

Afridi was shocked and in an interview with the Press stated – “The way I see it, the IPL and India have made fun of us and our country,” he said. “We are the Twenty20 world champions and for me the attitude of the franchises was disappointing. I feel bad for the Indian people who, I am sure, wanted to see us play in the IPL this year.”

Abdul Razzaq, the allrounder, said politics and sports should be kept separate. “They have basically tried to hurt our cricket and image and this is most disappointing because I believe there should be no politics in sports,” Razzaq was quoted as saying by PTI. “In the end it is the IPL which has lost out because the fact is our players have star value and are the best in T20 cricket.”

Sohail Tanvir, the best bowler in the inaugural IPL and an instrumental part of the Rajasthan Royals’ title win, wondered why so much effort was put into getting the clearance from his country’s board and government if none of the franchises wanted to buy Pakistan players.

“They mean to say none of our players are good enough to be in the IPL,” Tanvir said. “I am sorry to say the franchises have taken a decision not based on cricketing sense but on political grounds which is a shame and has hurt the image of the sport.”

Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, said the apprehension over the availability of Pakistan players was the main reason for them being unsold. “Franchises are no more ready to spend $7-8 million on someone who won’t be available for the tournament,” he said. “It not only exhausted their purse but also wasted slots. They want only those players who would be available for the tournament. They are spending money and they want to get the results.”

Shilpa Shetty, the co-owner of Rajasthan, echoed Modi’s words. “We were not convinced about their availability and that’s why we did not want to take any risk,” she said. “If someone is not going to be available, why bid for him.” She also said that though they had watched Tanvir over the past year, they were looking for a batsman.

The co-owner of Kings XI Punjab, Ness Wadia, had a different take, pinning the non-sale of Pakistan players to the lack of open slots for the franchises – 67 players were auctioned for only 13 vacancies. “I do not think that the Pakistan players were ignored purposely,” he said. “Many Australian players were too not auctioned. In fact, last year we suffered because of Australia.”

“Given the current relationship between India and Pakistan, we didn’t want to take a risk,” said a franchise official. “Imagine if we filled up two slots [out of 10] with Pakistani players and were then told that they couldn’t travel, or that their security couldn’t be guaranteed.”

The Fact That All the Pakistani players were ignored by the IPL franchises despite being the current T20 Champions proved that the Current Volatile relations between India & Pakistan, and Politics played a major role which as a result proved that IPL as a major sporting event was marred by Politics, and no franchisee was willing to take their chances of buying Pakistan Players at huge prices only to lose them in the end because of a political reason.

The End Result – Cricket Fans might suffer and they will surely miss seeing the current T20 Champions and talented stars like Afridi, Gul, Razzaq & Aamir playing in this year’s IPL.

Firm favourites: IPL champions Deccan Chargers are favourites for the Champions League Twenty20, with Adam Gilchrist one of their main threats

Cape Cobras (South Africa)
South Africa’s Twenty20 champions are a strong side with experience in the form of Herschelle Gibbs, Jean-Paul Duminy and Charl Langeveldt but the loss of Graeme Smith with injury will impact on their chances.

Deccan Chargers (India)
The IPL champions will be the tournament favourites with home advantage and four overseas players to call upon. Adam Gilchrist still has plenty to offer in Twenty20 cricket while for Andrew Symonds this is now his main mode of employment.

Delhi Daredevils (India)
Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir make up the world’s best opening partnership at the moment and Dirk Nannes, the Australian fast bowler, has emerged as an unlikely star in Twenty20 cricket. Glenn McGrath was on Tuesday confirmed as Paul Collingwood’s replacement. Look out for Owais Shah too.

Diamond Eagles (South Africa)
The weaker of the two South African franchises and Sussex will look to beat them to advance to the second round. Short on big names but have won three domestic trophies over the past four years.

New South Wales Blues (Australia)
Seven members of their squad played a part during the recent Australia tour to England and outside of the Indian sides they are the next strongest team. Phillip Hughes certainly has something to prove and Brett Lee relishes playing in India.

Otago Volts (New Zealand)
Outsiders but with Brendon McCullum and England’s Dimitri Mascarenhas they have plenty of Twenty20 experience and skill. Hamish Rutherford, son of former New Zealand captain Ken, is a young player who could emerge during this tournament.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (India)
No Kevin Pietersen but they probably don’t mind that — after his departure during this year’s IPL the team improved under Anil Kumble and reached the final. Jacques Kallis has turned himself into a good Twenty20 bowler while Ross Taylor and Mark Boucher provide strength in the middle overs.

Somerset (England)
Beaten Twenty20 Cup finalists, but thanks to the experience of Justin Langer and Marcus Trescothick, they probably have a better of chance of progression than Sussex. Peter Trego is one of the best Twenty20 players on the county circuit and James Hildreth and Craig Kieswetter have England credentials to prove.

Sussex (England)
The loss of Matt Prior (rested) and Murray Goodwin (ineligible) have hurt them deeply and left much resting on the powerful hitting of Luke Wright. Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla will be a key figure and Dwayne Smith is capable of match-winning contributions.

Trinidad & Tobago (West Indies)
At first glance the weakest of the teams but were too good for Middlesex at last year’s Stanford Challenge and the Bravo brothers, Dwayne and Darren, are capable performers. Left-arm leg spinner Dave Mohammed has a good Twenty20 record and captain Daren Ganga is probably the best skipper in West Indies cricket.

Victorian Bushrangers (Australia)
England know all about Cameron White’s ability with the bat while David Hussey and Brad Hodge are two of Twenty20 cricket’s better batsmen. The bowling is light and will be carried by Peter Siddle and Bryce McGain, a 37-year-old spinner mauled by the South Africans on his Test debut.

Wayamba Elevens (Sri Lanka)
A very strong side. Hammered Sussex in a warm-up match earlier this week and have a healthy smattering of Sri Lankan internationals including Mahela Jayawardene and Ajantha Mendis, while there is plenty of talk about young batting prospect Mahela Udawatte.

Surprisingly tickets for the first semi final at Delhi are priced higher than the final on October 23 at Hyderabad.

To witness the Delhi match, on October 21, the fans would have to shell out between Rs 400 and 1500 for the lower denomination tickets and Rs 6000 for the premium ones, a media release said.

At Hyderabad, the entry fee for the second semi final (October 22) and final will range from Rs 250 and 2000 for the lower end tickets and Rs 3000 for the premium ones. Champions League chairman Lalit Modi expressed confidence that the pricing would boost ticket sales. “The attractive ticket-pricing should be a huge impetus for fans to come and see some of the finest cricketing talents in the world display their prowess on the field,” Modi said.

The teams will be divided into four groups of three each and will initially play each other on a league basis. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the second stage and four teams from the second stage would make it to the semi-finals, it was announced on Sunday.

The tournament was scheduled to be held in India last year but was postponed because of the Mumbai attacks.

Deccan Chargers ( IPL 2009 Champion) The Royal Challengers (IPL 2009 Runner Up), and Delhi Daredevils (Top League Finisher in IPL 2009) will represent India, Victoria and New South Wales will represent Australia, while the Cobras and Eagles will the two South African teams. Otago from New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago from West Indies and Wayamba from Sri Lanka.

The two English teams will be decided after the domestic Twenty20 championship, which ends in August.

Deccan Chargers captain Adam Gilchrist said: “Champions League Twenty20 will provide a different level of stimulus as we will test our strength and our strategies against the best in the world.

“We are keen to make our club a global name and (there is) nothing better than winning the biggest league club cricket has to offer across the world.”

Anil Kumble, captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, said on the occasion: “We have achieved our first aim of qualifying for the Champions League Twenty20.We have learnt a lot by competing in the two editions of the IPL and are hopeful that we will do India proud by holding the Champions League Twenty20 trophy later this year.”

Lalit Modi, chairman, Champions League Twenty 20, said, “The inaugural edition did not take place last year due to unfortunate circumstances but we are fully equipped this time around to conduct an extremely successful tournament in India.

Manu Sawhney, managing director, ESPN Star Sports, said, “Today, we are the biggest stakeholder in the game of cricket globally and with our strong brands, we are well placed to fully leverage and exploit multiple opportunities across platforms and markets.”

The League will carry a prize pool of $ 6 million for 2009. ESPN Star Sports are the commercial rights holders for the League for a period of 10 years. The tournament is a joint venture by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Cricket Australia (CA) and Cricket South Africa (CSA).

WELL-BALANCED OUTFIT

TEAM- Delhi Daredevils

Strengths:
A balanced team laden with talent. Sehwag, Gambhir, Warner, de Villiers, Dilshan make it a dream batting order. Karthik and Bhatia do the allrounder’s job well too. The seam bowling looks in terrific shape with the left-arm trio of Nehra, Sangwan and Nannes all in top form. Amit Mishra provides the attacking spin option and Dilshan and Sehwag are very good part-timers.
Weaknesses:
Lack of variety in the seam bowling. All three are left-armseamers coming from the same angle. It makes it easier for batsmen if they get set and go after them. Lack of spinbowling options if Mishra has an off-day and Vettori is kept out.
Opportunities:
To show that the tag of title favourites sits well on them.
Threats:
Heavily talented mix of foreign players and the selection headaches it might provide. Overconfidence is another

BATTING SUPREMOS
TEAM – Deccan Chargers

Strengths
A devastating batting lineup in Gilchrist, Gibbs, Symonds, Smith and Rohit Sharma. If skipper Gichrist and Gibbs ensure a blazing start, Symonds and Rohit keep the momentum going in the middle. In bowling, India seamer R P Singh brings in the firepower, while left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha the much-treasured economy.
Weaknesses
Have shown a tendency to lose games from winning positions. The bowling relies too heavily on R P Singh & Ojha.
Opportunities
A title triumph will soothe the nerves of those who endured the horror run of last year, when they finished last.
Threats
The likes of T Suman, Ravi Teja may crumble when the margin of error gets minimal.

ANOTHER FINAL FLING LOOMS
TEAM – Chennai Super Kings

Strengths:
Led by the irresistible Hayden, the consistent Raina and the solidity of Dhoni, they possess a line-up that has ‘Made For T20’ stamped all over it. Dhoni’s leadership skills bring a calm composure that is often a clincher in close contests. Spin legend Muralitharan is another trump card.
Weaknesses:
Fielding has floundered time and again under pressure. It could prove costly, and demoralizing for a team that lacks depth in bowling.
Opportunities:
As runners-up, they can now buttress their brand as ‘champion stuff’ by going all the way.
Threats:
They may have got too used to Hayden providing the flying starts. If he fails, the shudder may well run down the batting spine.

HOME ADVANTAGE
Team – Royal Challengers Bangalore

Strengths
Kumble’s captaincy. He has led by example, mixed things up on the field, rotated his men well and extracted the best out of them. The South African revolution within RC, led by another veteran — Jacques Kallis — has made them a fairly strong side. Possess the best local knowledge and experience as they have five South Africans in their ranks, plus coach too.
Weaknesses
Very few genuine allrounders, with the exception of Kallis. Their longish tail could prove to be a liability against quality attacks.
Opportunities
First timers in the semifinal could go the distance and shed the ‘Test team’ tag.
Threats
Some of their players, like B Akhil, Vinay Kumar, could be overawed by the big occasion.

The Race For The IPL Semi Finals

As the second season of the IPL enters its final stages, Cricinfo looks at where the teams stand and what they need to do to qualify for the semi-finals. Delhi Daredevils appear certain to make it, but there are six teams fighting for the other three spots.

Team: Delhi Daredevils

Points/ Net run-rate: 16/ +0.362

Matches remaining: 4

Opponents: Punjab, Rajasthan, Bangalore, Mumbai

Barring a drastic change in form for the worse, Delhi are all but in the semi-finals. They are No. 1, four points clear of the team in fourth place, with a match in hand over four teams and two games in hand over the others. Even if they lose all their remaining games – an improbable event considering three are against opponents in the bottom half of the league – Delhi will still be in the running for a semi-final spot. Only if several permutations and combinations fall into place will Delhi be knocked out. A victory in any of the games will seal their spot.

Team: Chennai Super Kings

Points/ Net run-rate: 13/ +1.070

Matches remaining: 3

Opponents: Mumbai, Kolkata, Punjab

Chennai looked set to steam into the semi-finals, having won five games in a row, before their winning streak ended unexpectedly against Bangalore. The close defeat has left Chennai vulnerable but they have a game in hand over three other semi-final contenders. Their next match is against Mumbai, who also have a chance of making the semi-finals, and a defeat will leave Chennai needing to win their last two games in order to make it comfortably.

Team: Rajasthan Royals

Points/ Net run-rate: 13/ -0.329

Matches remaining: 2

Opponents: Delhi, Kolkata

Their campaign hasn’t been as strong as that of last season, but Rajasthan are still in the running for a berth in the semi-finals. The simplest route for them would be to win both their remaining matches in order to avoid depending too much on results of other games and the net run-rate, which is quite poor at the moment. However, one of their matches is against Delhi and should they lose, they will need to beat Kolkata convincingly and hope other results go their way.

Team: Deccan Chargers

Points/ Net run-rate: 12/ +0.292

Matches remaining: 3

Opponents: Kolkata, Punjab, Bangalore

Had Deccan not collapsed so dramatically against Delhi, their chances of making the semi-finals would have been much stronger than they are at present. Deccan are clinging on to one of the top four spots at the moment and need to win at least two of their last three games. However, the fact that two of their games are against the bottom-most teams gives them a better chance of qualifying. Besides, they have a game in hand over Rajasthan, Bangalore and Mumbai as well.

Team: Royal Challengers Bangalore

Points/ Net run-rate: 12/ +0.292

Matches remaining: 2

Opponents: Delhi, Deccan

Bangalore kept their semi-final hopes alive by pulling off an upset victory against Chennai. However, they have only two games to play and need to win both, against Delhi and Deccan, to have a chance.

Team: Mumbai Indians

Points/ Net run-rate: 11/ +0.483

Matches remaining: 2

Opponents: Chennai, Delhi

The match against Rajasthan Royals was Mumbai’s big chance of making a strong push for the semi-finals. They blew it, though, and are now faced with the tough task of winning their last two games in order to qualify while keeping an eye on net run-rate. What makes it harder is that Mumbai’s final games are against Chennai and Delhi, the top two teams at present.

Team: Kings XI Punjab

Points/ Net run-rate: 10/ -0.570

Matches remaining: 3

Opponents: Delhi, Deccan, Chennai

The probability of Punjab repeating last season’s performance of making the semis is extremely low. They are currently second from the bottom in the league and even if they win all three of their remaining games they will only be level with Delhi on points, provided the tournament leaders lose all of their last four matches. However, the likelihood of Punjab winning all three games, which are against teams in the top four, is low. A defeat against Delhi today will virtually knock them out.

Team: Kolkata Knight Riders

Points/ Net run-rate: 3/ -1.042

Matches remaining: 3

Opponents: Deccan, Chennai, Rajasthan

Kolkata were the first team to drop out of contention for the semi-finals and they’ve had a horrible season, with only one win from 11 matches. They are definitely going home but have the opportunity to take a few teams down with them. Their last three matches are of immense importance to their opponents who are all in the running for the semi-finals.
