The ICL Season 2 begins with a high octane opening ceremony on October 10, 2008 in Hyderabad. The Season 2 will see a total of 41 pulsating matches being played at four international standard stadiums in – Hyderabad, Panchkula, Gurgaon & Ahmedabad. ICL promises to make this Season 2 an unforgettable experience for TV viewers, spectators & cricket lovers across the globe.

The 9 teams comprising of the newly added Dhaka Warriors will play against each other once in every city. Every game promises to be a memorable one as each team has international players who have in the past single handedly won many matches for their respective countries. The teams to watch out for the ICL Season 2 are – the defending champions Hyderabad Heroes, the newly formed exciting team from Bangladesh – Dhaka Warriors, the strong Pakistan contingent – Lahore Badshahs and the first T20 team from Gujarat – Ahmedabad Rockets. All matches are scheduled to be played late evening with double headers on every week-end.

The key matches to look out for will be played on the opening weekend on October 10th, the defending champions Hyderabad Heroes will take on runners up Lahore Badshahs. This match promises to be an out and out thriller. Inzaman, the captain of the Lahore Badshahs had promised that this round he wants to win the ICL trophy. The Pakistani’s boys are raring to play.

The first weekend of ICL Season 2 is going to be pace setter and promises to usher in Diwali a little early. The best of 3 finals will be played from 13th to 16th of November.

The tournament kicks off on October 10th 2008 and will witness strategic transfer of players across the eight existing teams. ICL Season-2 will also witness the induction of new players (international & domestic) along with the strong fourteen member Dhaka Warriors side, strengthening the cricket talent pool in the ICL. Season-2 also sees a couple of international players like Paul Nixon & Hamish Marshall making their returns on the ICL platform.

What is the Indian Premier League?
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a franchise-based Twenty20 competition organised by the BCCI, and it has official sanction since it has the backing of the ICC. It features the world’s best cricketers playing – their affiliation decided by open auction – for eight city-based franchises, owned by a host of businessmen and celebrity consortiums. The inaugural edition of the tournament will run from April 18 to June 1.

What are the logistics of the IPL?
The tournament will begin on April 18, when the Bangalore Royal Challengers take on Kolkata Knight Riders at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The tournament will feature 59 matches in total, the teams playing each other on a home-and-away basis. Click here for the full list of fixtures.

Why is the IPL generating such a buzz?
Two main reasons why. One the football-club concept of the IPL, which is unlike anything cricket has known. The best players from across the world playing not according to nationality but according to market forces. Second, the sheer financial scale of the IPL is unprecedented at this level of cricket. The BCCI has already made close to US$ 1.75 billion solely from the sale of TV rights ($908 million), promotion ($108 million) and franchises (approximately $700 million). Players are expected to earn close to US$1 million for a three-year contract. It’s an entire cricket economy out there.

Who are the top cricketers involved?
The IPL has the top current players who will feature in its inaugural tournament, with the likes Mahendra Siggh Dhoni, Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Shoaib Akhtar, Mahela Jayawardene, Sanath Jayasuriya, Yuvraj Singh, and Matthew Hayden participating. England will have only one representative in Dimitri Mascarenhas because the IPL will clash with their domestic season, while Australia’s Michael Clarke has opted to focus on his regular cricket.

Who are the franchise owners – celebrities and others?
Mukesh Ambani, the Reliance Industries chairman, acquired the Mumbai franchise for $111.9 million over a 10-year period; beer and airline baron Vijay Mallya, who also owns a Formula 1 team, won the Bangalore franchise for $111.6 million; Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment won the Kolkata franchise for $75 million; the biggest surprise was the Chandigarh franchise, which went to Preity Zinta, another Bollywood star, and Ness Wadia, together with two other industrialists, for $75 million. The winning team will get richer by $3 million if they win the first edition of the tournament.

How are the players paired with teams?
The BCCI conducted a player auction on February 20, in which the respective franchises bid for a maximum of eight international players from pool of 89 players who had been contracted to the board. But Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, and Yuvraj Singh were not up for auction as they had been given ‘iconic’ status by the BCCI – which means that they had to represent the city in which they are based. Another exception to the bidding process was with regard to the Australian players – a clause in the rules of Cricket Australia meant that each team could select a maximum of two Australians.

Who were the top draws at the IPL’s player auction on February 20?
India’s ODI captain Dhoni and Australia allrounder Andrew Symonds were the big buys at the auction in Mumbai, with the Chennai franchise buying Dhoni for US$1.5 million and Hyderabad bidding successfully for Symonds at US$1.3 million. India’s young stars Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma and Manoj Tiwary together fetched nearly US$3 million. But Australian legends Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath were not so lucky as Jaipur bagged the legspinner for US$450,000 and Delhi took home McGrath for his base price of US$350,000.

What about the second auction on March 11?
The IPL conducted a second auction on March 11 for an additional list of 28 players [including 14 from India's Under-19 players - bought on the basis of a draft system] who had signed on with them after the first round of auctions were completed. But the franchises who had spent the least in the first auction were in a better position to buy as the major buyers from the first auction had almost reached their spending cap of $5 million. The most expensive player on the day was James Hopes, the Australian allrounder, who was purchased by Mohali for $300,000. Jaipur, the lowest spenders in the first auction, snapped up Dimitri Mascarenhas, Shane Watson, Morne Morkel and Sohail Tanvir for a total of $385,000. The biggest name traded on the day was Misbah-ul-Haq, who was signed by the Bangalore franchise for $150,000.

What will be the team names?
As of March 12, six of the eight franchises have announced their teams names and unveiled their jerseys and logos: Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Bangalore Royal Challengers and Mumbai Indians, Hyderabad – Deccan Chargers, and Mohali – Punjab Kings 11.

When do the teams have to announce their line-ups for the first edition of the IPL?
The BCCI has set March 18 as the deadline for the eight teams to announce their final line-ups for the inaugural edition of the IPL.

Who will coach the eight IPL teams?
The IPL has lured some of the top names in the business with three Australians, one South African and one New Zealander signing up as coaches. Kolkata roped in former Australia coach John Buchanan and Mohali signed up former Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody, while Delhi recruited Victoria coach Greg Shipperd. Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe was the big surprise for Bangalore before Chennai announced that they had bagged former South Africa captain Kepler Wessels as coach. India’s fielding coach Robin Singh will coach Hyderabad and Jaipur named Shane Warne as their captain and coach while Mumbai are yet to reveal their cards.

Whose idea is the IPL?
The IPL is the brainchild of Lalit Modi, the vice-president of the BCCI, and is modeled along the lines of club football in Europe, specifically the English Premier League. Though there is a school of thought that the idea came about in the 1990s, the announcement that such a tournament would happen, and which it would be a precursor to Twenty20 Champions League, cricket’s version of the European Champions League, came only after Subhash Chandra, the owner of Zee Televison said, in April last year, that he was intending to start an unofficial league called the Indian Cricket League, fuelling speculation that is was a reactive idea rather than a proactive one.

How different are the IPL and ICL to each other?
The IPL is an official sanctioned Twenty20 tournament, and unlike the ICL, which is not recognised by any of the national boards or the ICC, it will have a better status, international reach, players, and the requisite infrastructure by default. Since the IPL is sanctioned by the ICC, players don’t have the danger of bringing their international/first-class careers to a halt – as is the case with the ICL – whose players have been banned by the various boards. Another major difference is with regard to franchises – the ownership of the team rests with the individual owners and not one single entity.

The inaugural season of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) will host a 20:20 tournament. Fans will brace the exciting competition which will comprise of twenty matches, with the final on December 16.

A 20:20 game is completed in about three hours. Each innings lasts approximately 75 minutes. This format brings a cricket match closer to the time span of other immensely popular team sports such as football.

An Unofficial Guide of the Indian Cricket League – ICL

The Indian Cricket League is set to begin on November 30, with a host of familiar names taking part, though many are no longer playing international cricket. Here’s your guide to the unofficial Twenty20 tournament

What is the Indian Cricket League?
The Indian Cricket League (ICL) is a tournament set to run parallel to BCCI-run tournaments in India. Contrary to common perception, the ICL is not a breakaway league but an entirely new entity.

How did the ICL come about?
The roots of the ICL lies in the same issue as those of Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket: discontent over TV rights. The Essel Group’s Zee TV believed it got a raw deal in the allocation of Indian cricket¹s TV rights the last time around when, despite making the highest bid, Zee was denied the rights for want of experience in sport broadcasting. The ICL – a joint venture between the Essel Group and Infrastructure Leasing & Finance Services (IL&FS) – is seen by many as Essel head Subhash Chandra Goel’s attempt to get back at the BCCI.

The Essel Group announced the formation of the league on April 3, 2007, saying the BCCI had failed to create “a reserve pipeline of players”, and that the idea behind the league was to create an “ideal pool with killing instinct”. They were quick to add that the ICL was not in conflict with the BCCI, and the board would be free to draw from the ICL’s talent pool.

What is the Essel Group?
Essel is one of India’s leading business houses, with interests in media, packaging, entertainment, education, and infrastructure development among other areas. It had an estimated turnover of $2.1 billion for the last financial year. Zee TV, with a range of specialist channels – news to entertainment to sport – has a strong presence in the Indian electronic media market, and the group’s DNA is a new entrant in the English-language newspaper market.

How is the ICL different from other leagues, like, say, the Kanga League?
Unlike other leagues that are run or funded by the BCCI or other parties, the ICL involves television coverage, which is the BCCI¹s main source of revenue.

Who will play in the league?
The ICL currently comprises six teams: Mumbai Champs, Chandigarh Lions, Chennai Super Stars, Delhi Jets, Hyderabad Heroes and Kolkata Tigers. The ICL, with its talent scouts -Balwinder Sandhu, Pranab Roy, Erapalli Prasanna, Bharat Reddy, and Rajesh Chauhan, all former India players at various levels – has managed to assemble a core of overseas players who have either retired from international cricket or are disgruntled with their respective boards (or are simply in it for the money) , sidelined Indian internationals who have little hope of making it back into the national team, and domestic players, most of whom are nowhere close to national selection.

The biggest draws for the ICL at present are Brian Lara, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Lance Klusener, Chris Cairns, Nathan Astle, Chris Harris, Abdul Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood, Imran Farhat, Nicky Boje, Vikram Solanki, Paul Nixon, Hamish Marshall, Dinesh Mongia and Deep Dasgupta.

After a lull in recruitment, several England cricketers – including Paul Nixon, Chris Read and Vikram Solanki – and South African cricketers such as Dale Benkenstein signed up fir the ICL In the fortnight before the teams for the tournament were announced.

Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf was one of the ICL’s star recruits but he later cancelled his contract and joined the officially sanctioned Twenty20 tournament, the Indian Premier League (IPL). Several other marquee names such as Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Stephen Fleming were initially reported to be interested in the ICL, but are now associated with the IPL.

What is the lure for players to join the ICL?
Although there are no official figures, it is speculated that on the lower end of the scale a player stands to earn as much as Rs 30 lakh ($72,600 approximately) a year, irrespective of how many matches he plays.

The ICL’s fees for ex-internationals are said to be substantially higher. Players from the English counties will earn, it is believed, £50,000 for a three-week stint.

The league has promised $1 million in prize money in the first season, half of which goes to the champion team. The Ranji Trophy champions last season took away Rs 50 lakh (US$127,000) by comparison.

Essel has promised to invest Rs 100 crore (US$ 25 million approximately) on the ICL to start with. It also claims it will look after the players better than the BCCI does and provide them job security.

While the prize money for the ICL seemed enormous at the time of the announcement, the wind was taken out of its sails by the IPL which offered US$ 3million as prize money. Also, in a move widely seen as a reaction to the ICL, the BCCI increased both the pay and the prize money on offer in domestic cricket.

What is the format of the tournament?
The inaugural tournament of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) will be held between November 30 and December 16 at the Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium in Panchkula, Chandigarh (four hours from Delhi). The tournament will comprise 20 Twenty20 matches, with the final on December 16. The dates for the tournament clash with India’s home Test series against Pakistan.

What is the standing of the ICL in international cricket?
The BCCI has not recognised the league, in consequence to which the ICC and most national cricket boards have refused to recognise it.

Indian players, current or former, who associate with the ICL in any capacity have been barred from availing any BCCI benefits – which also implies they will not be eligible for selection to the national team. The ICL, though, has moved court, contesting the BCCI’s right to represent “India”.

Several national boards have also threatened to ban their players for aligning with the ICL. However, the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA), which is the representative body of first-class cricketers in England and Wales, has come out in support of the cricketers who have joined the ICL.

Where does the ICL go from here?
Not entirely clear. It’s still a surprise to some that the ICL has made it so far, got so many players on board and found a ground on which to hold the tournament. Indian television channels – and not just those owned by the Zee group – are running promos. There is even talk of a repeat tournament six months down the line.

Much will depend on the success – always a relative word, in this case even more so – of the first tournament. If Lara, Inzamam and the other big names land up and catch fire, if the concurrent India-Pakistan series starts to drift, the public will be more likely to watch. Meanwhile, the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission’s (MRTPC) investigative wing is looking into the BCCI¹s refusal to share infrastructure with the ICL. If the courts conclude that the BCCI is indulging in monopolistic practices, they can intervene, much like they did when they fined the board for barring players from writing for newspapers and magazines. The coming months promise to be interesting, not necessarily in purely cricketing terms.
